Blazing Saddles

J&J’s cycling adventures

And we’re off! Arrived in Portsmouth Sunday evening and took a short trip on a ferry, followed by a short ride to the Brittany ferries terminal where we queued in the evening sun and watched rain clouds looming on the horizon. Hmm, the super-hot sunny weather of the last week seems to have come to and end and it looks like our first week of two might be a bit wet. Ho hum.

An elderly couple walk past looking confused. They had left the ten lane static queue of vehicles to find a loo and now they couldn’t find their caravan. Mind you, there were a lot to choose from with little to distinguish them.

Cycling onto the ferry feels good, as it always does, there’s a real sense of freedom when we’re on our bikes. The staff stop the traffic to let us cycle on ahead, presumably to minimise the chances of us being squished under a poorly driven car/caravan combo. The ferry is large and feels rather new. There’s a false window in our generously sized cabin with a backlit picture of a window overlooking St Malo from the sea.

Dinner on the ferry is a baked spud with saucy mushrooms. It is both delicious and cheap – hurrah for French catering!

We move to the bar just in time for the quiz. Entertainment Man™️ works his way through the questions despite his inability to pronounce most of the names involved. We quickly lose interest and instead entertain ourselves with crisps.

Millenial Century arrive and set up for their gig. Yes, that’s really what they’re called and so our expectations are low. They murder Dancing In The Dark with prerecorded backing and horrible folk-style close harmonies. It’s lucky Springsteen isn’t taking a caravan to Normandy this weekend or he’d probably beat them to death. One song is so much more than enough and we retire for the night. I find an ominous sign in our cabin and hope I’ll be able to sleep.
